Iron Gall Ink
The Banshee's Wail Over the Mangle Pit
Name:TM(tm)
Website:Eiden Myr
Location:New York, United States
Birthdate:1962-07-25
Bio:Writer (novels and short stories; see below). Copyeditor (science fiction, fantasy). Musician (Irish traditional). Orange belt (Krav Maga). Named for a comic-strip character (Terry of Terry and the Pirates). Graduated high school on Friday the 13th, graduated college in Orwellian 1984. Veteran of The New Yorker (fifteen years in Editorial; bailed eight years ago), New York City transit strikes (two) and blackouts (two) (also a few hurricanes and one very small earthquake), SFWA kerfuffles (two in my year on the board, or maybe it was three; it's a blessed blur to me now), sf fandom (thirty-some years--the Star Trek Bicentennial-10 and correspondence clubs count), freelance copyediting (twenty-two years), Maine schooner vacations (twenty years). Was once almost run over by a nuclear submarine. Am racking up trips to "I" countries (been to Ireland, India, and Italy; just missed out on Iceland, still fear this is egoistic and wonder if I should consider Uruguay, Uganda, Uzbekistan). My writer's CV (listing the jobs you don't include on a corporate resume) includes bartending in establishments both savory and un-, mucking out stables, clerking and gofering at a musicians' booking agency, sorting sweepstakes entries for Publishers Clearing House, and selling watches on the street in Galway.

Am perfectly happy to be added, will most likely add back.

This journal's now in its sixth year. I locked up most of the oldest posts at one point; I unlock a few here and there as the mood strikes. On April 8, 2007, I renamed this LJ account from "irongall" to my real name; I started the journal so that I could hang out with [info]akaspeedo and other friends, but after all this time it seems to be as close to a blog as I'll ever bother with, so it might as well have a username that's less cryptic. I have what's ostensibly a writing journal over at [info]eidenmyr, but it's been more of a reading filter than a journal, and I'll be porting some posts over here from there and consolidating the friends lists in 2008.

"There were various formulations for ink, especially in the early middle ages, but the most common concoction became that known as iron gall ink. It used combinations of iron vitriol, or ferrous sulphate, and oak galls mixed with wine, water or vinegar. Oak galls are swellings found on oak trees caused by insect attack, and whoever thought that it might be a brilliant idea to use them for concocting ink is lost to history." (Inks and Colorings)

"The modern word 'ink' derives from another Latin word: encaustum--'that which burns in.' By far the most common ink in Western European history is the encaustum made from tannin and copperas, that is tannin made from oak galls (the swelling in the bark of the oak tree) plus iron sulphate." (Christopher Jarman, Illumination for Modern Calligraphers)

"Here is a simple recipe for making ink: place half a dozen oak galls into half a jam jar of rainwater. Drop in four or five small iron nails. Leave on a sunny windowsill for a week, by which time you will have ink. ...With the addition of a little gum arabic, this will make a fine traditional ink that will not fade even on prolonged exposure to light. There are no exact proportions for this ink--you will need to try it for yourself to see how it suits your purpose." (Christopher Jarman, Illumination for Modern Calligraphers)

"The Banshee's Wail Over the Mangle Pit" and "Eel in the Sink" are names of traditional Irish dance tunes.
