It took me this long to get double-As for my camera and get a shot of this that looks more like the physical cover than the Amazon image does (it's quite a lovely, classy cover, so it deserves it), but at last I can say, "Look what showed up on my porch!"





It's the German-language edition of The Binder's Road, the sequel to Zauberin des Lichts, and I wasn't twmed this time; German Amazon dropped the weird Cassiopeian middle initial from my byline for this book. And it makes a lovely set with this one.

It's really a beauty, and my mom, who does have some German, says it's neat to read in translation. It was cute to see her bury herself in her German dictionaries and play, when the copies came.

The change in language is estranging in a really neat way. I remember getting that feeling most strongly when the anthology containing my first story sale was translated into Finnish. There was my byline...over this incomprehensible-looking text. It was something I wrote, and yet it wasn't. German's less alien to me than Finnish, but even so, these are entire volumes full of words that are kind of mine and kind of not (and sprinkled through with the familiar names of the characters). It's delightfully weird. Maybe a little like seeing a family member in a heavily costumed stage play.

And every time I look at it I think about the translator and what a huge job that must have been. Would love to shake his hand sometime and thank him.
